We will acquaint you with the Kovcheg (The Ark) Orthodox ensemble. There are four vocalists in the ensemble lead by Tatiana Svetinskaya. The name of the ensemble has nothing to do with the Noah’s Ark, as one may suppose, but was born during the quartet’s kayak trips on Russian rivers. During stopovers the quartet performed spiritual chants for their friends. People listened openmouthed, the majority of them had no notion of church music which back in 1980s was something unusual. The quartet members had also to answer questions on religion, to explain to them the purport of spiritual chants… Perhaps for the first time in their life those people became thoughtful of God and their fate.
