Colombia has accused Venezuela of blowing up two foot bridges on the joint border. Venezuela's Vice President Ramon Carrizales confirmed the destruction of the bridges built by Colombia, saying they had been used for drug smuggling and illegal activities. Tensions between the two countries surged in late October after Colombia signed a treaty on military cooperation with the United States, allowing Washington to use Colombian army bases for its purposes. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez strongly condemned his neighbor and warned his people to prepare for a war.
