The unilateral proclamation of Kosovo's independence in February 2008 contradicts the international law, Kirill Gevorgyan, Russia's Foreign Ministry's envoy in the International Court in The Hague said.  He said that nobody had cancelled resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council which guaranteed territorial integrity of Serbia. He noted that this resolution obliges the parties to solve the problem of Kosovo's status by means of talks. The Russian diplomat said that the failure of talks on Kosovo status did not mean that those talks were over.

Spain fully supports Russia in its position on Kosovo. The Spanish representatives in The Hague also stressed that the UN's resolution is still valid and Kosovo's problem had not been solved yet.  The independance of Kosovo region was recognized by 63 countries, while Russia, China, India and some other states think that Kosovo Albanians had violated the international law.
