Russia, NATO reach new level of relations – Medvedev
| Dec 16, 2009 15:48 Moscow Time |
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said that Russia and NATO are reaching a new level of relations. He was speaking during a reception honouring NATO’s Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in the Moscow Kremlin today. Our relations, Medvedev said, have lived through various stages, ranging from the Cold War to the current partnership ties. Accoridng to him, the two sides have also survived periods of complications, like the one in August last year. The Russian President implied the suspension of NATO-Russia contacts over differences in the assessment of Georgia’s action in South Ossetia. Medvedev feels that Russia and NATO should cooperate since the number of common threats the world over keeps growing, rather than decreasing. “Who could ever imagine, for example, that we would have to jointly react to such a threat as sea piracy?”, he asked. Anders Fogh Rasmussen said for his part that NATO does not threaten Russia, but seeks to become Russia’s partner in countering common challenges.
