Maoists proclaim "state autonomy" in Kathmandu
| Dec 17, 2009 13:10 Moscow Time |
In Nepal, Maoists claim to have seized control of the capital Kathmandu which they have allegedly proclaimed an “autonomous state”. On Wednesday, some 5,000 members of Maoist groups stormed through police cordons into the central square, the Times of India reports. At a follow-up rally, leader of the Communist party of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, announced the creation of a “state autonomy” in Kathmandu and similar “autonomies” in 13 other districts where Maoists have their parallel governments. Although largely seen as symbolic, the action may seriously destabilize the political situation in Nepal and provoke riots.
