Russia believes the Middle East must be free of weapons of mass destruction and WMD delivery vehicles. In a message to his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak on Monday, President Medvedev also urges intensified international mediation between the Palestinians and Israel, including by the quartette of Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union. He calls on the sides in the conflict to refrain from unilateral action and comply with the roadmap peace plan from the quartette. The Russian leader believes the Palestinians must step up effort to restore Palestinian unity, as called for by the United Nations and the latest Middle East initiative from the Arab countries.
