Russia to celebrate Gagarin’s space flight 50 years ago

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is due to chair the first meeting of the Organizing Committee to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight in 2011. The anniversary is due to be marked at the federal, regional and local levels by casting commemorative medals and tokens, holding issue-related exhibitions, building and reconstructing museums. 2011 will be proclaimed Russian Cosmonautics Year. On April 12th 1961, Yuri Gagarin made the first-ever space flight aboard the VOSTOK spaceship by making an orbit around the Earth in 108 minutes.
