New York hosts Computer Recycling Day. Established in 2004 as part of the program aimed to develop environmentally friendly technologies in big cities, the Computer Recycling Day attracts people to bring their used computers, TV sets and other kinds of home electronics to the special recycling points. In New York City and in 11 more American states it is prohibited to throw away used TV sets and computers because they contain such toxic substances like cadmium and mercury. Some electronics giants, for example Apple and Dell, accept their used equipment from consumers for free.
