A sudden eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion  has prompted an urgent evacuation of all resorts in the surrounding area. Standing at 26 hundred metres above sea level and aged about a half million years, Piton de la Fournaise is rated as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. In the past three years alone, it has erupted over a dozen times. The last outburst produced more than a hundred million tons of lava which slightly increased the size of the Reunion island.
