Russia will lease out its NERPA multipurpose nuclear submarine to India in the second half of the year for a period of 10 years. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, India’s Navy Command officers and a Russia-trained Indian sub crew are due to arrive at the submarine base near Vladivostok shortly. The Indian crew will test the submarine out at sea, with the acceptance certificate due to be signed afterwards. During the sea trials of the NERPA in the Sea of Japan in November 2008, the onboard fire-fighting system went off for some reason, pumping freon gas into the compartments. 20 people died as a result, while another 21 were poisoned and hospitalized. Following repairs the submarine effectively passed all tests and was commissioned in the Russian Navy in December last year.
