India approves building nuclear power plant with Russia

The Indian government has approved a project to build a nuclear power plant in Haripur, West Bengal, with the assistance of Russia. According to Environment Minister Jairam Pamesh, a nuclear plant should cause no damage to the local environment. Haripur is one of three sites in the south of India where Russia plans to build up to 20 power generation units. Under bilateral nuclear cooperation agreements six units will be built in Kudankulam in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and four to six will be built in Haripur in West Bengal.
