UN urges Israel to unseal Gaza

A UN official has urged Israel to immediately open all checkpoints on its border with the Gaza Strip to allow construction materials to flow into the Hamas-controlled enclave hospitals to restore water and sewage pumps and waste water treatment plants. Max Gaulard, a UN humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, said the continuing blockade of Gaza undermined the local healthcare system, putting the lives of more than a million of the enclave’s residents, half of them under 18, at risk. Israel’s Cast Lead military operation in Gaza in December 2008-January 2009 damaged 15 of its 27 hospitals and 43 of its 110 primary health facilities. A year after they are still to be restored. Starting from January 2009, up to 80 billion liters of untreated waste water are pouring into the Mediterranean every day, threatening to wreak an ecological disaster, the coordinator said.
