Sri Lanka is electing a new president on Tuesday. The polling stations are open from 0700 to 1600 (local time) with preliminary results expected later in the day and the final results to be released on Wednesday. The incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa has a high chance of winning the election after he defeated the separatist “Tamil Tigers”. His main rival is Sarath Fonseka, former commander of the Sri Lankan Army, who led the final ground operation against the separatists.
