Moscow may host an international Middle East conference in the coming months, a member of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe told a PACE session in Strasbourg on Tuesday. Senator Ilyas Umakhanov said that “positive shifts in Palestinian-Israeli contacts” were needed in order to fix the exact date of the Moscow conference. He urged the Middle East conflicting parties to comply with the “road map” peace plan worked out by the quartet of international mediators – Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union. The senator stressed the need for international support of Mahmoud Abbas as the legitimate leader of all Palestinians and for continuing work with Hamas to prevent the marginalization of Palestinian society and to bring rival Palestinian faction closer to agreement.
