India test-flies MiG-29Ks
| Feb 4, 2010 14:37 Moscow Time |
Six Russian MiG-29K naval fighter jets have been successfully test-flown in India and will join the Indian Air Force’ fleet on February 16. The planes arrived in Goa in early December. A ground-based maintenance center built with the help of Russian specialists will serve as a temporary deployment site for the MiGs until Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier arrives, presumably in 2013. In January 2004, Russia and India signed a contract for the supply of 16 MiGs as part of a package deal on the Admiral Gorshkov, with the remaining 10 jets due to be handed over this year. The contract totals an estimated $2.3 billion.
