Iran close to accepting nuclear deal
| Feb 6, 2010 21:11 Moscow Time |
Iran says a deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel is close and the parties concerned have only to agree on the amount of nuclear fuel and on the time and place of the exchange. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki confirmed after meeting with IAEA chief Yukiya Amano in Munich that Iran is prepared to swap up to 20 percent of its low-grade uranium for enriched uranium abroad. The proposal to send Iran’s uranium for further enrichment in Russia and produce nuclear fuel rods for Tehran’s nuclear reactor in France came from the IAEA at the initiative of the six international mediators, which included Russia, the United States, Britain, France, China and Germany. Iran took a long time to answer and that set the US and a number of European countries thinking of toughening sanctions. The project will guarantee IAEA control of the Iranian nuclear program and dispel international fears over its purposes.
