Russia has begun building the fourth strategic nuclear submarine of the Borei class, a source with the Defense industry complex said Monday. The submarine is to carry the Bulava missile complex.
The construction works are under way in the shipping yard of the city of Severodvinsk in the north of Russia. The official ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction will be held later, the source said. He said that it is most likely to be timed to the Submariner Day which is March 19. the working name of the future submarine is Svyatitel Nikolai (Sanctifier Nikolai).
The nuclear submarine will carry 12 intercontinental ballistic missiles and will be equipped with a rescue chamber for the whole crew.
Russia plans to build at least 8 submarines of the Borei class. These submarines should form the backbone of the national marine strategic nuclear forces.
