Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is concerned over the electricity shortage in his country. The emergency situation is due to an abnormally dry season and next to no rains as 70% of all Venezuelan power comes from the Guri hydropower plant. Since November 2009 the country has cut down on its electricity consumption by 20%. There is no heavy metallurgical output at the Sidor plant anymore and in many parts of Venezuela shops and government institutions have been working shorter hours.
