Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East has commemorated the crews of cruiser Varyag and gunboat Koreyets that fought an uneven battle in the Russo-Japanese war exactly 106 years ago that day. A solemn procession laid wreaths and flowers at the Varyag memorial.
On the night of February 9, 1904 the two warships were locked by a Japanese flotilla in the bay of Chemulpo. The captains of the Russian ships sank their vessels after damaging three Japanese cruisers and destroying a torpedo boat.
