A powerful volcano eruption has begun on the island of Montserrat of the Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean. The Soufriere Hills volcano is jetting out plumes of smoke about 10 km into the sky. Showers of ash fell on several communities in the Guadeloupian island of Grande Terre some 80 km south of Montserrat, hampering road traffic and shutting the local airport. Repeated volcanic alerts on Montserrat since 1995 have forced two-thirds of local residents to flee. The rest moved into northern areas less prone to eruptions.
