The Collective Security Treaty Organization, CSTO, and the United Nations have good prospects for cooperation in peacekeeping, says the Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin. As he addressed the UN Security Council meeting on Friday, he pointed out that the United Nations should promote interaction with regional organizations. The diplomat also said that Russia was prepared to build up its potential for peacekeeping. Over 350 Russian nationals currently form part of the UN military and police peacekeeping missions the world over. Churkin feels that the CSTO peacekeeping force can take part in operations to maintain peace both within the CSTO member-nations and in other regions, if authorized by the Security Council.
