Russian army must get modern weapons - Putin
| Feb 17, 2010 12:22 Moscow Time |
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has demanded that the Russian army be equipped with modern weapons. “The Army should have at least 30% modern weapons by 2015, and at least 70% by 2020”, the premier told the government at a late Tuesday meeting focused on key priorities of the 2010-2020 military program. The army will be equipped with up-to-date communications, command and reconnaissance means, as well as with fifth-generation jet fighters and new warships, the premier said. He said the government would put the necessary finances behind this but made clear that “ineffective expendirures” would not be tolerated. Much attention will be given to nuclear deterrence forces and air defense. Companies making competitive products will enjoy preference during the distribution of state orders, Putin said.
