Putin welcomes end of red tape for foreigners in Russia
| Feb 17, 2010 14:04 Moscow Time |
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has welcomed a proposal by the Federal Migration Service to simplify the issuance of residence and work permits for foreigners. Meeting with FMS chief Konstantin Romodanovsky on Wednesday, he called for making this procedure less bureaucratic and less nerve-fraying. At present, applicants need to collect between 15 and 20 various papers to obtain a temporary residence permit and then collect the same documents once again. About 5 million foreigners are currently working in Russia, mostly from Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, according to FMS estimates. The number of illegal migrants is insignificantly small.
