Italian town says crucifixes must stay
| Feb 18, 2010 09:42 Moscow Time |
City Hall in Galzignano Terme, Italy, has voted, by an absolute majority of votes, to make crucifixes mandatory for all state institutions in the town. The decision defies the November ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that the presence of crucifixes in school rooms violates the right of parents to bring up their children according to their religious beliefs. The ruling triggered sharp controversy in Italy. Many politicians and prominent public figures openly opposed it. The Vatican called it a “shortsighted mistake”. The Italian government vowed to appeal the ruling in the European Court.
