Bulava tests to continue in summer - deputy defense minister
| Feb 20, 2010 17:06 Moscow Time |
Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin says tests of the Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile will resume in summer this year. In an interview broadcast by Ekho Moskvy radio, Popovkin said a special panel is currently looking into what caused the missile to fail during the previous launches. The last launch of Bulava on December 9th last year failed because of a technical failure in the third stage. The cutting-edge solid-fueled system is designed for mounting it on nuclear submarines. It can carry up to 10 independently-targeted maneuvering nuclear warheads that can change flight trajectory and destroy targets within a range of up to 8 thousand kilometers. Bulava carrying submarines are expected to form the backbone of Russia’s Strategic Nuclear Forces.
