Medvedev and Obama close to signing new START
| Feb 24, 2010 21:00 Moscow Time |
Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama have pledged to intensify efforts to sign a new strategic arms reduction treaty at an early date. The two leaders made this pledge as they discussed the matter in a telephone conversation on Wednesday. President Medvedev emphasized the importance of getting the treaty signed as quickly as possible and both presidents instructed their delegations to speed up talks. The previous treaty expired in December last year. The Russian and US presidents agreed to sign a new one during the Moscow summit in July. The new START is to guarantee a substantial reduction in nuclear warheads and means of their delivery.
