Moscow will not endorse sanctions against Iran if they are meant to harm its people, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview for the Voice of Russia, Russia Today television and RIA News agency. At the same time, he did not rule out the possibility of the UN Security Council pressing ahead with the sanctions after Tehran’s reluctance to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Moscow has no doubts that Iran does have the rights possessed by all non-nuclear members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, including the right to develop nuclear energy for civil needs, Lavrov said. He urged Iran to make its nuclear program transparent and give ample answers to all IEAE questions. Tehran’s refusal to cooperate will inevitably force the UN Security Council to return to the issue, the minister remarked.
