Somali pirates seize five UN truck drivers
| Feb 26, 2010 14:54 Moscow Time |
Somali pirates have extended their attacks to land and seized five drivers of trucks carrying the UN World Food Programme cargoes. The pirates are demanding a release of their arrested accomplices. The drivers of other UN trucks have refused to transport WFP cargo until the local authorities provide them with armed escorts. Somalia has been unable to cope with the problem of piracy since the single Somali State broke up in 1991. The International Maritime Bureau claims that in 2009 the Somali pirates attacked 217 ships and seized 47 of them. The pirates currently hold in captivity 9 ships and some 200 crewmembers.
