| Feb 28, 2010 10:09 Moscow Time |
Voters in Tajikistan went to polling stations on Sunday to elect a new parliament with 217 candidates, most of them from the ruling People’s Democratic Party, contesting 63 deputy mandates in the lower house. Like in the previous years, the PDP led by Presdient Emomali Rakhmon stands the biggest chances of winning the parliamentary majority, followed by the pro-government Communist Party and the opposition Islamic Rebirth Party. In Russia, polls opened in 8 cities to enable some one million Tajik labor migrants to vote. The elections are being supervised by more than 500 international observers, including from the Commonwealth of Independent Stats, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
