Talks with Iran are still possible, says Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin. The ITAR-TASS news agency quotes the official as saying that Moscow opts for searching for a political and diplomatic settlement and that the Russian delegation at the UN has got no instructions to start drafting, at the UN Security Council, another resolution on sanctions against Tehran. The six mediator-nations, namely Russia, China, the US, the UK, France and Germany have thus far been unable to reach agreement on imposing additional sanctions on Iran. China claims, for example, that time is not ripe yet to take more measures against Tehran, since the Security Council members have already adopted five resolutions, of which three contain sanctions. But western diplomats insist that Tehran is developing its nuclear programme for military purposes and will not hear of giving it up. Meanwhile Iran claims that it’s engaged in research that exclusively peaceful in character.
