The UN General Assembly has adopted a landmark resolution, authorizing all the UN appropriate bodies to cooperate with the Collective Security Treaty Organization, CSTO and to have direct contact with the regional Organization comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The General Assembly has also instructed the UN secretary general to have regular consultations with his CSTO opposite number.
Until now, CSTO, as a regional Organization, had an observer status in the UN, The new level of cooperation is in recognition of CSTO contribution to the international efforts to deal with the threats and challenges facing the whole world. CSTO's effort at strengthening regional security, peacekeeping, as well as its relentless fight against terrorism, illegal drugs trade and arms smuggling, plus its all-out war against cross border crimes and trade in human beings, as well as its contribution to the global efforts at dealing with the aftermath of natural and manmade catastrophes have received worldwide acclaim. CSTO is helping to stabilize the situation in the vast Euro-Asian continent, first of all, around Afghanistan, which has been turned into an exporter of terrorism and illegal drugs.
Commenting on the new UN resolution, Andrei Grozin, head of the Near and Central Asian section of the Institute for the CIS said:
"The international community, represented by the UN has had to accept things as they are, and not look at them through the prism of geo-political system. It is clear that the security issue around Afghanistan cannot be solved without the CSTO", said Grozin, saying that the UN resolution will promote better cooperation between the world body and CSTO in their joint efforts to strengthen security in the region in particular, and in the world at large. The UN approach differs markedly from that of NATO. In October 2008, a Declaration of cooperation was secretly signed between the UN and NATO, without the knowledge of members of the World Organization.
