Israel favors resumption of peace talks with Palestinians

Israel favors the speedy resumption of peace talks with Palestinians. The statement came from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his telephone talk with Egypt’s president Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian leader, for his part, urged a halt to Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank and a lifting of the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. Mr. Mubarak criticized Israel’s decision to put Hebron and Bethlehem shrines, equally sacred for Jews, Muslims and Christians, on the Israeli Heritage List, which, he said, hurts the feelings of Muslims and jeopardizes the peace process. The Palestinian-Israeli talks were suspended in late 2008 over Israel’s military operation in Gaza in retaliation for rocket attacks on Jewish cities. Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is holding a series of meetings in League of Arab States to discuss prospects for resuming an indirect dialogue with Israel.
