Silver medallion of Russian emperor returns to Russia
| Mar 4, 2010 12:57 Moscow Time |
A stolen silver medallion of Russia’s last emperor has been handed back to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Addressing the ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Byerle said that a small part of the vast and great Russian heritage had returned to its homeland. This became possible thanks to cooperation between Russian and American law enforcement agencies. The medallion was posted for sale at an on-line auction. In the spring of 2006, the Hermitage reported the theft of more than 220 pieces, including jewelry, worth a total of $130 million. Later, some of the missing items were returned by art collectors and antique dealers, while some others were discovered in a trash bin near a police building.
