Russia will ask NATO to explain upcoming Baltic war games

Russia will press the North Atlantic Alliance for detailed information about the Air Force exercise that’s due in the Baltic countries this month, says the Russian ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin in an interview with the Interfax news agency. The official said he was surprised at reports in the Baltic countries’ press, linking the forthcoming exercise to the Russian-Belarusian military exercise Zapad-2009 and Ladoga-2009. If this is “our response to Chamberlain” of sorts, Rogozin says, then it is out of line with the spirit of partnership and is suggestive of competition in the use of military force and military hardware on the European continent. The Russian ambassador at NATO called attention to the fact that the Russian exercise was held on sovereign national territory, while the US troops will emerge on the territory that borders on the Russian Federation. NATO’S Air Force exercise is due over Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia on the 17th through the 20th of March. French Mirage-2000 fighters, Polish F-16 and Lithuanian L-39 Albatross planes are due to take part, as well as US mid-air refueller aircraft.
