Under a blanket of tight security designed to thwart insurgent attacks, Iraqis went to the polls Sunday to choose from among more than 6,000 candidates vying for 325 seats in the country’s new parliament. Almost 19 million voters are eligible to turn out for the election, only the second vote for a full term of parliament since the 2003 US-led invasion. Insurgents have vowed to disrupt the elections with violence, above all against Sunnis who dare to come to the polling stations. Three polling stations have already come under fire. Insurgents have also launched three mortars toward the Green Zone - a heavily fortified area home to foreign embassies and the prime minister's office in  downtown Baghdad.
