The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicked off in Alaska’s largest city of Anchorage on Sunday in an event that will see the participation of more than seventy mushers and their powerful sled dog teams. The winner of the 1,800-km race will collect a prize of 50,000 dollars and a new pickup truck. The Iditarod commemorates a 1925 rescue mission that delivered medicine by sled-dog relay to Nome to combat a diphtheria outbreak. It will take the participants at least two weeks to finalize the race, specialists say.
