START talks may continue till April - source

The tenth round of Russian-American talks in Geneva on a new bilateral strategic arms reduction treaty may stretch till the beginning of April, a source in the Russian delegation has been quoted by Interfax as saying. But it looks like this is probably the last round before the Russian and U.S. Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama put their signatures under the treaty, the source said. Analysts point out that in order to take effect, the document needs to be ratified by parliaments, which may prove a lengthy and difficult process both in Russia and the United States. The former START treaty, signed in 1991, expired last December. The new one that is currently being negotiated stipulates deeper cuts – to between 1,500 and 1,675 for warheads and between 500 and 1,100 for delivery vehicles.
