Israeli construction in East Jerusalem to continue - official

Israel will go ahead with its plans to build more housing in Jerusalem, Israeli Cabinet Secretary Tzvi Houser said in an interview with Kol Yisrael Radio. He acknowledged, however, that the plans had been published at an extremely unsuitable moment. “This shameful and painful mistake should not be repeated,” Houser said. On Tuesday, the Israeli Interior Ministry granted permission for 1,600 new homes for Jews in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood in East Jerusalem. The move thwarted the peacemaking diplomacy of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who was in Israel at the moment as part of his Middle East tour. Chief of Palestinian National Administration Mahmoud Abbas declared talks with Israel impossible under the current circumstances. The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed Israel’s behavior as unacceptable and breaching international norms for conflict resolution.
