Turkey recalls ambassador to Sweden over Armenian genocide vote
| Mar 12, 2010 06:53 Moscow Time |
Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Sweden for consultations and cancelled a planned visit to Stockholm by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. The move followed the approval on Thursday by the Swedish parliament of a resolution, which brands the killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman forces during World War One as genocide. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives approved a similar resolution last week that labeled Turkey's early 20th-century atrocities against the Armenian people as 'genocide.' Turkey has repeatedly warned that if passed, the US resolution would hamper its ongoing fence-mending with Armenia.
