2010 was officially declared the Year of Leo Tolstoy in Moscow, timed for the 100th anniversary of his death. This decision was made by the authorities of the Russian capital at the initiative of the Leo Tolstoy Institute of Languages and Cultures.
It’s no coincidence that the staff of the Institute of Languages and Cultures has started the jubilee arrangements well in advance of the event. The concept of the Institute, founded by Leo Tolstoy’s descendants and unique in its kind, is based on the ideas of the great writer and thinker. Apart from traditional jubilee events, like literary soirees and social evenings in the spirit of the Tolstoy age, a number of international projects are planned to be implemented.
Together with arranging the Year of Leo Tolstoy, the Institute is ready to participate in establishing an international center, named after the great writer, in the house where he wrote the first part of the “War and Peace” novel. Not only the Russian capital is commemorating the jubilee, but also the leading literature museums of Russia, which have agreed on a range of joint projects with the Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana” (“Sunlit Meadows”) in the Tula region, where the writer was born.
