The famous tunnel under the river Thames has been opened to the general public for two days. This has happened for the first time in 145 years, reports RIA Novosti. The 400 meter tunnel, once dubbed "the eighth wonder of the world", was constructed in the mid-19th century exclusively for cargo and passenger traffic. However, the structure produced so overwhelming an impression on contemporaries, it was decided to open it up for pedestrians. In the times of Queen Victoria the tunnel became a popular entertainment venue for Londoners, offering shops and even a theatre. Later, it was transferred to the railways, and accommodated the first line of the London Tube. The latter is presently closed for repairs, offering a unique opportunity to grant access to the tunnel, a chance not to be missed.
