The Russian Government has indorsed a draft agreement with South Ossetia on a military base on the territory of the republic. A corresponding decree has been signed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. A similar accord was signed with Abkhazia in the course of a recent visit to Moscow of the republic’s President Sergey Bagapsh. The document grants the Russian military the right to use the base jointly with Abkhazia’s Armed Forces for maintaining the republic’s safety and sovereignty and counteracting international terrorist forces. The term of the agreement is 49 years, with a provision for automatic extension. Russia acknowledged the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August 2008 after Georgian troops attacked South Ossetia, resulting in destruction and loss of life.
