International mediators denounce Israel’s housing construction plans
| Mar 13, 2010 09:48 Moscow Time |
The four international mediators in a Middle East settlement have denounced Israel’s decision to build more housing in East Jerusalem. Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations point out in a statement that Israel’s unilateral moves cannot predetermine the outcome of the talks and will not be recognized by the international community, says the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow. The mediators have also urged Israel and the Palestinians to resume the peace dialogue or at least to create an atmosphere that would not prevent the parties from reaching an agreement. The four international mediators are due to scrutinize the Middle East situation during their meeting next Friday, March 19th. Earlier this week the Israeli authorities approved a housing expansion plan for East Jerusalem. Over 1,500 homes are due to be built in the traditionally Arab-populated part of the city under the plan.
