A rescue operation to save 11 fishermen stranded on an ice floe is currently underway in the east of Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East. Harsh weather conditions, including gale force winds, snowstorms and high-altitude waves, have complicated the rescue effort. 15 fishermen had gone ice-fishing despite danger warnings. 4 have been rescued by now. Rescuers can’t reach the stranded on board large vessels for shallow depths, and they can’t reach them by air for poor visibility. Emergencies Ministry workers are trying to reach the fishermen on motor boats.
