Centenary of Soviet lion tamer
| Mar 13, 2010 17:01 Moscow Time |
This Saturday is the 100th birth anniversary of the world’s first lion tamer, the Soviet circus artist Irina Bugrimova. She took up taming in 1939 after winding up an illustrious career in sports, including ice hockey and motor racing. She tamed a total of 80 lions, making them docile partners in hugging, jumping and teetering. Veteran circus goers remember her lying on a live carpet of lions. Bugrimova left the arena at 66 and continued as a circus coach until she was almost 90. She died nine years ago.
