A delegation from the Russian city of Kostomuksha is taking part in events underway in the Finnish city of Suomussalmi in connection with the 70th anniversary of the end of the 1939-1940 Soviet-Finnish war, known as the Winter War. The Russian representatives laid wreaths to war graves and visited Red Army memorials. 15 thousand Soviet soldiers were killed in the Battle of Suomussalmi in winter 1939. The Soviet-Finnish war erupted after Finland had rejected a Soviet request to cede part of Karelian Isthmus in exchange for twice as larger territories in Karelia. The war lasted 105 days – from November 30th 1939 to March 13th 1940.
