Russia wins biggest number of medals at Paralympiad

On the outcome of the first day at the Paralympic Games in Canada, Russia won the biggest number of medals – 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze ones. On the second place is Ukraine with 2 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes. Germany, Norway, Belarus and the US have one medal each. The first Russian gold was won by Irek Zaripov in a 2.4 km pursuit race for sportsmen with aberration of locomotor system. The second gold – by Konstantin Mikhaylov in a 3 km ski race for sportsmen with aberration of locomotor system who perform in sitting position. Biathlete Anna Burmistrova also won a gold in a pursuit for women. Marina Iovleva won a silver in 2.4 km persuit race for sportswomen with aberration of locomotor system who perform in the sitting position. Lubov Vasilyeva came second in 3 km ski race for sportswomen with sight aberration, and Nikolay Polukhin – also second in a similar competition for men.  Skiers Alyona Gorbunova and Mikhalina Lysova won a bronze each. In this Paralympiad, over 600 sportsmen and women from 44 countries compete for 333 medals in downhill skiing, ski cross-country race, biathlon, curling and hockey on sledge. The games will last till March 21.
