| Mar 15, 2010 08:06 Moscow Time |
The ruling United Russia party is leading in Sunday's regional elections. According to preliminary results from the Central Election Commission the vote held in 76 out of 83 Russian regions has been successful also for other parties represented in the State Duma lower house of parliament. In the Republic of Altai, the Khabarovsk, Kaluga, Kurgan and Sverdlovsk regions United Russia deputies will be working closely with their colleagues from the second-placed Communist party, the Liberal Democrats and the Just Russia party. The Right Cause liberal opposition party and Russia's Patriots party have failed to clear the 7% threshold. In one of the biggest surprises of Sunday’s vote, Viktor Kondrashov, a Communist, won mayoral elections in Irkutsk. The final tally will be announced later in the week.
