Russia turns over 7 suspected pirates to Somaliland
| Mar 15, 2010 09:06 Moscow Time |
Russia’s navy has turned over seven pirates to the breakaway state of Somaliland, where they will stand trial, a spokesperson for the local police said. In early February the Neustrashimy ship of the Russian Navy captured the pirates as they were trying to attack the Slovenia-flagged Ariella ship. Russia has been taking part in international anti-piracy efforts in the Indian Ocean since September 2008. The Marshall Shaposhnikov anti-submarine ship and Pechenga tanker are expected to replace the Neustrashimy ship in the Gulf of Aden soon.
