A scandal around the recent provocative report by the Georgian TV channel Imedi on an alleged Russian military attack has triggered condemnations from around the world. The French Foreign Ministry has urged to call to book all those behind the haox. In Russia the Chief of the Duma International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev described last Saturday’s TV report as an abominable and vile provocation. He pointed out that the Imedi TV channel is fully controlled by the Georgian President. The US ambassador to Georgia John Bass said that what the Imedi channel reporters had done was irresponsible; adding that this kind of programme did in no way help boost national security. Russia’s ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozoin says he will call NATO’s chiefs’ attention to the scandalous TV report. Last Saturday Imedi reported in a special news roundup an assassination of Georgia’s President Saakashvili and an outbreak of war with Russia. The report contained a brief mention that the news was imaginary. The broadcast triggered panic, and a drastic increase in phone calls to the ambulance service.
